Greetings from HMAS Leeuwin's 37th Intake. Rhoades Division
This website has been commissioned in an attempt to locate all of the Junior Recruits (JRs) of the 37th Intake of the Royal Australian Navy’s ‘Junior Recruit Training Establishment” (JRTE), HMAS Leeuwin, situated at Fremantle, Western Australia.
This intake was known as Rhoades Division and functioned from October 1971 to September 1972 under the command of LCDR ‘Guns’ Johnson and later Leut Derek Mitchell. The original intake consisted of approximately 105 boys between the ages of 15 and 17 who enlisted from all over Australia. Of these boys, according to our ‘Passing Out’ booklet, only 96 graduated and were subsequently posted to various ships and establishments of the Royal Australian Navy. Some were posted directly to their category training courses, others went to sea as Ordinary Seaman, with some of these participating in the Vietnam conflict. Within the initial twelve months of training at the JRTE, some members of the division were selected to enter the Royal Australian Naval College, HMAS Creswell as Midshipmen via the ‘Topman’ scheme. Others were offered apprenticeships to train as Naval Artificers at the Royal Australian Naval Apprentice Training Establishment (RANATE) at HMAS Nirimba. We intend to celebrate our 40th anniversary by having a reunion in 2011 which of course, can only be achieved if we are able to locate as many of our mates from the 37th intake as we are possibly able to. This site is dedicated to the JRs and divisional staff of the 37th Intake, Rhoades Division. However, we also acknowledge all the JRs who have passed through the gates of the JRTE, HMAS Leeuwin, whether still serving, enjoying civilian life or retired. We also pay our respects to those who no longer walk among us. May they rest in peace. It is anticipated that this website will become a focal point where the members of the 37th Intake, Rhoades Division, can remain in contact with each other well into the future, as well as providing a written and pictorial history of the intake’s endeavours and achievements. If you are a visitor to our website, please feel free to leave a message in our guestbook which can be found by clicking the forums link. If you are an exJR of the 37th Intake, please register by creating an account.

darkhelmet writes "Greetings fellow shipmates, For all those 37th matelots who read this I'm telling you it is your duty to get off your backsides and start getting enthused about the forthcoming reunion. It will most probably be the last one. I for one missed a reunion once, my school one. Mind you I had good reason as I think I was overseas at the time. However, it has always played on my mind for not attempting to attend because every time I go back home there is always someone there to remind me that I missed 'that reunion'. It is not bloody easy trying to organise a reuinion and Tom, Ted, Glen & Dick are doing a bloddy good job getting this far. I'm telling you it can't be done alone. I for one would love to meet up with every one of you that I started the Puss with. I might not have kept in touch but I still feel that bond we all forged together and comradie is still there today.
At the 1990 reunion there were only 14 of us with families but we had a bloddy good time. Sadly though for many of us it was the last time saw Steve Longhurst as he passed away not long after. Guys, this is a moment in our journey we once started together nearly 40 years ago we should never let pass.
It's up to each and everyone of you to make this happen & make it a success.
By the way, if you want a good book to read, I can recommend....
In the Navy, by Dave Rickard (1999) One Hundred Days: The memoirs of the Falklands Battle Group Commander (1992), and Heart of Oak by Tristan Jones (1984) not mention all the Nelson books I have!
From the Darkhelmet
